First competition day draws 80,000 sports fans
A sunny Sunday was the perfect setting for the start of competitions at the third summer edition of the Youth Olympic Games, where big crowds went to see the world’s top youth athletes in action at the four main sports parks.
Spectators of all ages swarmed the venues at the biggest multisport event in Argentina’s history on the initial day of action at the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018.
About 80,000 people attended sports and cultural events held at the Youth Olympic Park, Green Park, Tecnópolis Park and Urban Park (the four main competition zones) as well as the standalone venues like Paseo de la Costa and San Isidro Nautical Club.
Hockey 5s was one of the most popular events among spectators on the first day of competition at Buenos Aires 2018.
Many more fans are expected to attend the competitions as the world’s largest, multisport youth event unfolds. About 600,000 people picked up free passes in the lead up to Buenos Aires 2018, which grant them access to 32 sports that are part of the 2018 Youth Olympic Games programme.
