USA teenager Joseph Diaz Jr booked a last-16 bout against Cuba's reigning world champion Lazaro Alvarez Estrada with a slick performance in his Bantam Weight preliminary bout at the ExCeL.

The 19-year-old Diaz pulled away from his rugged opponent Pavlo Ishchenko of the Ukraine, landing uppercuts and straight right hands in the final round as he skated to an impressive 19-9 victory.

Diaz faces a tough task to nudge towards the medal rounds, but said: 'The Cuban beat me last time we fought but I felt I could have done a little more. I've prepared well and that's what I'm going to do.'
