Tokyo 2020 launches official ticket website, lottery to begin on 9 May

Living in Japan? This part’s for you

Tokyo 2020 announced today that applications for participation in a lottery for the initial offering of Olympic Games tickets will be accepted from residents of Japan from 9 to 28 May 2019, with the results announced on 20 June.

Start by heading to the Tokyo 2020 Official Ticket Website, which was launched today in both English and Japanese. It contains the latest information on the event line-up for each session of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, details of the different categories of tickets, their prices and seat maps, as well as ticket sales guidelines.

I’m in Japan, I know what tickets I want, now what do I do?

First of all, don’t panic. You’ve got until 28 May. While this is the best chance for Japanese residents to get the tickets that they want for the Games, you have some grace if you forget on 9 May - or even 10 May.  

Just remember that applications can be made online only via the Tokyo 2020 Official Ticket Website, and pre-registration is necessary. Do that here https://id.tokyo2020.org/. An English version of this pre-registration page will be launched soon.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again

If you are living in Japan and are not successful in the lottery, keep calm. You will still be able to request tickets during the first-come, first-served phase, which will commence in autumn 2019. A further phase of ticket sales will start in the spring of 2020, offering first-come, first-served sales on a global basis. Check back later for details.

I’m coming from abroad, where do I get my info?

People living outside Japan will be able to purchase tickets through Authorised Ticket Resellers (ATRs). From 9 May 2019, ATRs can conduct promotional activities in their assigned territories and engage in Olympic ticket promotion prior to the launch of actual ticket sales, so be on the lookout.

ATRs can then commence their ticket sales from 15 June 2019, though the sales launch date in each territory may vary depending on each ATR’s sales plans and schedules. To learn more about the ticket sales schedule, you can find your respective ATR here.

Here’s a hot tip: While overseas residents cannot purchase tickets via the Tokyo 2020 Official Ticket Website at this stage, this option will be available to them from the spring of 2020.
