Lausanne 2020 flashback: Quotes of the YOG

The Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) gave young athletes the chance to experience the Olympic spirit in Lausanne, and they had plenty to say about their experience. Here’s our selection of the most memorable quotes from the YOG.

“We love St Moritz; I think it's one of mine and [luge partner Natalie Corless's] favourite tracks. It's really cool that we got to win a medal on the only natural track left in the world.”

Canadian luger Caitlin Nash appreciated the history and legacy of the Olympia Bob Run in St Moritz following a silver medal in the luge doubles.

"Winning the gold medal was the best feeling ever. I am going to celebrate by having a rest."

Japanese snowboarder Kimata Ryoma didn’t envisage a loud celebration following victory in the men’s big air event.

“I am going to celebrate by getting some cheese fondue at the [Youth Olympic] Village, so I am very excited.”

Ryoma’s compatriot Arito Motonaga, however, had his heart set on a distinctly Swiss celebration after winning gold in the men’s mass start event.

“Now I have three colours of medal: gold, silver and bronze. That’s a super-good combo."

Maerta Rosenberg of Sweden now owns a full set of YOG medals, with her gold coming in the women’s 5km classic cross-country event.

“My mum is at home watching on the computer. I think she'll be smiling like me.”

Lisa Hirner knew that she could rely on one viewer from her native Austria as her mum tuned into the coverage online to see her daughter win the women’s Nordic combined gold medal.

“It’s what we always do. We dance directly before the start. It’s just our thing, our preparation. It keeps us loose and loose is fast.”

Germany's Vanessa Schneider explains the secret which helps her, and team-mate Jessica Degenhardt, get in the zone for their winning women's double luge runs.

“I cannot believe I am signing autographs like a famous person. This event has been very well supported and it shows how much people enjoy watching ski mountaineering.”

Swiss ski mountaineer Robin Bussard was overwhelmed by the shockwaves he and twin brother Thomas made after they won silver and gold respectively in the men’s individual event.

“I can’t stop crying. I don’t have words to express what I feel like right now. I started very fast and kept going in first position. It is just a dream come true.”

Spain’s Maria Costa Diez was overcome with emotion as she stormed to victory in the ski mountaineering women’s sprint.

“It's really important to look after our environment. It was also really nice in the hotel because they always reused the forks and the knives.”

Ignaz Gschwentner reminded us how important it is to take care of the environment after he won gold for Austria in the mixed NOC team sprint on the frozen lake in St Moritz.
