IOC Executive Board concludes a three-day meeting in Lausanne

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board (EB) today wrapped up its meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland. The proposal to put forward new IOC Members for election by the IOC Session and the future host of the Winter Youth Olympic Games were discussed, amongst other topics.

International Volunteers Day

The third and final day of the IOC EB meeting in Olympic House coincided with the 2019 edition of International Volunteers Day.

IOC President Thomas Bach opened his traditional press conference by thanking “all the volunteers involved in sport all around the world, especially all of those who are helping to organise the Olympic Games”.

“Without them, there would be no Olympic Games and no sport as we know it,” he said.

Earlier today, the Organising Committee of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 launched its volunteer programme.

Sustainable Olympic Games

President Bach underlined the “very positive results of Olympic Agenda 2020 with regard to sustainability”, following the reports on Wednesday by the Organising Committees for Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022, which have both received ISO 20121 certification for sustainable event management.

Future Winter Youth Olympic Games

The Future Host Commission for the Olympic Winter Games has started its work, and recommended initiating a targeted dialogue with the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee for the Winter Youth Olympic Games 2024.

Olympic Channel

The IOC EB received a report on the Olympic Channel, which announced a total of more than 2.6 billion video views since its launch in 2016, across 19,000 pieces of content. Now available in 12 languages, the Olympic Channel has established partnerships with 92 Federations and broadcast more than 3,500 live sports events.

Election for the IOC Athletes’ Commission and proposal regarding new IOC Members for election by the IOC Session

The EB approved a list of 30 athletes to run for the IOC Athletes’ Commission election at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

“The IOC Athletes’ Commission is the democratically elected and legitimate voice of the athletes and has a seat on the IOC Executive Board,” recalled President Bach.

“Athletes are involved in every single decision the IOC is taking,” he added.

The EB also decided to propose three new IOC Members to the Session in January.

In addition, the EB approved the proposal to put forward Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kenya, Amina Mohamed, for election to the IOC Ethics Commission.

The next IOC EB meeting will take place on 8 January in Lausanne, just ahead of the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Youth Olympic Games.
