Figure Skater Han Yan proud to represent “YOGgie batch of 2012”

We caught up with Innsbruck 2012 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) champion and China's hope in the figure skating Han Yan as he stepped off the ice with a beaming smile after his team short programme yesterday.

Innsbruck 2012 to Sochi 2014. How do you feel?

You see the China flag on my jacket? I am wearing my country’s flag on my chest. I am so fortunate that I was part of the Innsbruck Youth Olympic Games; maybe that is one of the main reasons why I am here. I got to experience the Olympic fever, what to expect and how to prepare for it. And here I am! I am proud to represent the YOGgie batch of 2012.

How has it been so far in Sochi?

Great. We have beautiful Russian friends; they have been very nice to us. I have trained hard and I am aiming for the first step on the podium. Even when I’m off the rink, it’s like the ice calls out to me.

Who is your role model?

It has to be Canada’s Patrick Chan. It is a dream come true to see him train and compete on the same ice. He is a big star. I look forward to seeing all my heroes here compete and perform. But on the ice, I am here to bring home the gold.

Nanjing will host the next edition of the YOG. How does it feel to bring the Youth Olympic Games home?

Oh, it is such an honour. I, on behalf of all my countrymen, welcome you all to Nanjing. Come and see the next generation of champions in action!

The second summer Youth Olympic Games will take place in Nanjing from 16 to 28 August 2014.
